October Feature: Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Parkland

PARKLAND, FL- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in America. Locally, many Parkland residents are battling breast cancer, as breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Nearly 300,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone.

West Boca Medical Center Radiologist Dr. Jon Rosensweig is an expert in the field, and he shares his knowledge and experience with the local community.

One of the greatest misconceptions, says Rosensweig, is the belief that breast cancer only runs in certain families, and that not having a family history of breast cancer means a person won't end up with the disease.

"The belief that if you don't have a family history of breast cancer, you won't get it, is false," says Dr. Rosensweig. "80% of all new breast cancer cases are new in the family. That's an astounding statistic to most people. And a reason everyone should be on top of their check-ups."

The recommended personal care plan is to have a mammogram every year beginning at age 40, says Rosensweig. One of the unknown aspects of the mammogram process is the effectiveness of the 3D mammogram, which is available at The Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging. The 3D technology gives a significantly more accurate picture of the breast tissue, which is far better for the patient.

"3D imaging gives us a complete picture, and without it, we don't have a full picture of what's going on with the patient," says Rosensweig.

Another key component of getting the best care at The Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging is the complete servicing of a dedicated breast center.

"You want to visit a facility that is dedicated to breast imaging," adds Dr. Rosensweig. "We can even calculate your lifetime risk of breast cancer based on a number of factors, and that information shows us how to proceed with our patients. From age to tissue density to imaging and other factors, we chart the very best course for the patient."

The Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging has been awarded the Breast Center Certificate of Excellence by the America College of Radiology.

"We are equipped to handle every issue that could arise in this area of care," summarized Rosensweig. "From the basic check up to far more advanced cases, The Breast Center at West Boca provides our Parkland community with the best possible care available in South Florida."
