When it comes to imaging, you don't need to wait

Dr. Marc Kalis, Radiologist at The Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging

Few things in life are more agonizing than the time between a biopsy and the delivery of test results. The anxiety of waiting for what could be a life-altering answer for days or even weeks is almost unbearable.

Luckily for the patients of radiologist, Dr. Marc Kalis, the wait is never long. The Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging Center, where Dr. Kalis has been practicing since 2009, is designed to take a woman from testing to biopsy to diagnosis quickly, typically within a single day. That kind of dedication to patients’ physical health and their mental well-being is partly what drew Dr. Kalis to the Breast Center.

"Patients can get their mammogram results almost immediately, within 30 minutes or so, if they choose to wait here," he says. “The benefits of that are that if they need additional studies, they can get those done immediately.”

Other breast centers may take two weeks up to a month to confirm a biopsy diagnosis. At West Boca, the focus is on reducing that time and reducing patient anxiety. This sensitive approach is also accompanied by a high caliber of diagnostic medical care. The Breast Center offers some of the most advanced procedures, including stereotactic, ultrasound and MRI guided biopsies, lymph node biopsies, radioactive seed localizations, digital mammography, and a 64-slice CT scanner.

The best part of the job? Getting to work with patients.

Dr. Kalis appreciates getting to work closely with patients by interacting with those whose tests he’s reading.

"I get to follow patients from start to finish regardless of what their results are or what the outcome is," he says.

The goal of building the Breast Center was to create a warm, inviting atmosphere where patients could count on guidance through every step of the process. It’s about focusing on the individual patient, providing good, quality, comprehensive medical care, and creating personalized plans that fit the individual.

Having everything under one roof also improves accuracy. Doctors, nurses and technicians already have a working relationship, so anything in question can be reviewed by more than one person on the spot. The center also immediately puts together a treatment plan, so a patient already overwhelmed by unexpected results doesn’t have to worry about coordinating visits with other doctors, consultants and surgeons.

Even if he has to give a patient bad news, Dr. Kalis says, "At least they have a plan on how to take care of it and how to treat it before they leave here so they're not left wondering what's going to happen next."
