SILS (Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery)
SILS is one of the latest advancement in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and allows the physician to perform surgical procedures through a single skin incision located in the patient’s umbilicus, or bellybutton.
Previously, patients had two surgical options: open surgery or laparoscopic surgery with multiple incisions. Unlike traditional laparoscopic surgery, single-incision laparoscopic surgery requires only a small incision (approximately one-half inch) in the bellybutton. As a result, the patient may experiences less pain and a quicker recovery. Patients also enjoy the aesthetic benefit of fewer visible post-operative scars.
Procedures performed with Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery can include:
- Colon Resection: surgery to remove part of the large intestine
- Cholecystectomy: surgery to remove the gall bladder
- Hysterectomy: surgery to remove the uterus
Benefits of Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery is designed to include:
- Less scarring
- Less pain
- Shorter hospital stays
- Shorter recovery
- Faster return to normal daily activities
