West Boca Medical Center Participates in 5K to Raise Money for Breast Cancer

Oct 15, 2015

Boca Raton, Fla. (October 15, 2015) — In an effort to help end the fight against breast cancer, West Boca Medical Center is sponsoring the “Making Strides of South Palm Beach” walk.

The event will take place on Oct. 24 from 6:30 to 10 a.m. at the Mizner Park Amphitheater in Boca Raton. The purpose of the walk, which will begin at 8 a.m., is to honor breast cancer survivors, help spread awareness and raise money to find a cure for the disease.

West Boca Medical Center is serving as a silver sponsor this year, committed to raising $2,500 or more. These funds will help support breast cancer research, provide information and services to the community, and give women access to various screenings and treatments.

“At the Making Strides Walk, we celebrate survivorship and pay a meaningful tribute to those affected by breast cancer,” said Mitch Feldman, hospital CEO. "It is with great pleasure that West Boca Medical Center will once again take advantage of the opportunity to sponsor such an important event."

The walk was founded in 1984 by a cancer survivor named Margery Gould Rath, who wanted to raise funds to move the fight against cancer forward. The first event was held in Boston and became an instant hit, attracting 200 walkers. Every year since then, the race has continued to prosper, with participants donating over $460 million for the cause.

“Every October, I look forward to joining many of our patients and their families in the Making Strides Walk,” said Jay Garcia, director of the Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging. “Uniting with others gives us the power to make a difference. Silence won't finish the fight – only action will.”

The Breast Center offers a sensitive approach when dealing with families and patients who come in for treatment. The center has a high caliber of diagnostic medical care, with some of the most advanced breast imaging procedures available, including digital mammography, MRI, ultrasound and a 64-slice CT scanner.
