West Boca Medical Center announced that it has been recognized with a five-star rating for clinical excellence in maternity care from HealthGrades, a leading source for independent healthcare quality information. In addition, West Boca Medical Center ranked in the top ten percent of hospitals in the nation for maternity care, and has been recognized with the HealthGrades 2006/2007 Maternity Care Excellence Award™.

The 2006/2007 HealthGrades programmatic ratings for maternity care are based on the following criteria: in-hospital complication rates associated with vaginal and cesarean deliveries, in-hospital volume, neonatal mortality, and complication rates for non-indicated or patient choice cesarean sections.

“We are very pleased to receive this recognition,” says Ruth Schwarzkopf, R.N., M.H.M., chief nursing officer at West Boca Medical Center. “I think it’s a great reflection of the standard of care we provide to all our patients.”

For its 2006/2007 ratings, HealthGrades independently analyzed the quality of maternity care for more than 1,400 hospitals across 17 states that make this information publicly available, objectively assessing their clinical performance and quality over the three year period from 2002 – 2004. The four criteria measured were weighted based on consensus from a physician panel. Each factor’s percentile score was multiplied by its weight and then summed to create an overall score. Based upon each hospital’s overall score, HealthGrades applied the following rating system.

  • Best – Top 15% of all hospitals within 17 states
  • Average – Middle 70% of all hospitals within 17 states
  • Poor – Bottom 15% of all hospitals within 17 states
Receiving a five-star designation indicates a hospital has scored in the top 15% or better in the nation for clinical quality.

“Each year, HealthGrades assesses hospital quality and publishes every hospital’s ratings online,” explained Samantha Collier, HealthGrades’ vice president of medical affairs. “Three million people visit healthgrades.com each month in order to determine the hospitals in their communities that provide the highest quality care. Women in the West Palm Beach Area should be aware of the information available regarding healthcare quality and the outstanding recognition received by West Boca Medical Center for maternity care.” Collier added.
