Breastfeeding and Lactation Support
Breastfeeding encourages close contact between mother and baby. Studies have shown that when mothers hold their babies skin-to-skin immediately after birth, babies are better able to regulate their heart and respiratory rates and they feel less pain. The close contact also keeps baby warm and secure. Breastfed babies are often calmer and cry less.
Breastfeeding provides your baby with the optimal nutrition for the best start in life and provides health advantages that last far beyond infancy. Breastfeeding can reduce the risks of sudden infant death syndrome, ear infections, respiratory infections associated with asthma and pneumonia, diarrhea, diabetes, obesity and childhood leukemia.
Breastfeeding also offers health benefits to mothers beginning immediately after birth. Breastfeeding helps return the uterus to its original size so moms heal faster. Breastfeeding can also promote postpartum weight loss and can decrease the risks of breast and ovarian cancer and osteoporosis.
Although breastfeeding is natural, that doesn’t mean that it comes naturally to all moms and babies. West Boca has a board-certified, in-house lactation consultant to give new mothers the proper guidance and support that they need to be successful with breastfeeding. Our lactation consultant is available to answer questions, illustrate proper techniques, and assist mothers and babies with any challenges that they may encounter.
